One of the six communes (in addition to Listrac-Médoc, Moulis, Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Julien) within the French Haut-Médoc area which are independent appellations and are allowed to bear the place name on the label. Of these, Margaux is the most famous and largest municipality in the centre of the Médoc. The vineyards cover around 1,300 hectares of vines. The appellation also includes the municipalities of Arsac, Cantenac, Labarde and Soussans. The red wines produced there are among the best in the Médoc. The red grape variety comes from France. The name is probably derived from the French word for blackbird (merle), because these birds like to eat the berries, which are very sweet when fully ripe.
