One of the six famous communes (in addition to Listrac-Médoc, Margaux, Moulis, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe) within the French Haut-Médoc region, which are own appellations and are allowed to use the commune name on the bottle label. The neighbouring municipality of Beychevelle is also part of the municipal appellation, with around 900 hectares of vineyards. A special feature is that there is a 16-hectare enclave in the commune whose wines are entitled to bear the Pauillac designation of origin.
