The appellation (also Bourg or Bourgeais) of the Bordeaux wine region, named after the town of the same name, is located on the right bank of the Gironde estuary. From here, Bordeaux wines were exported to other countries very early on, but the area has always been called the "little brother" of the Médoc to the west. The vineyards cover almost 4,000 hectares of vines on mostly clayey limestone soils in 15 communes of the Gironde département. A special feature is that, unlike other areas in Bordeaux, the area is largely free of frost and hail.
