The winery is located in the municipality of Villenave-d'Ornon in the Pessac-Léognan area of Graves (Bordeaux). It was bought by the INRA in 1968 by the Gasqueton and Hanappier families to carry out viticultural research. The vineyards cover 14 hectares of vines, ten of which are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (40%), Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and four with Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. It is the only winery in the Graves area where only the white wine is classified as "Cru Classé". It is blended half from Sauvignon Blanc and half from Sémillon. Until the end of the 1970s, all of the wine was produced by André Lurton, who had been a tenant before the INRA purchase. Then the INRA took the business into its own hands. Lurton acquired part of the vineyards in 1967 and founded Château Couhins-Lurton.
