The area in the south of the Bordeaux region was declared an appellation in 1980 under the name Cadillac. It is named after the town, which also gave the name to the famous car brand in honor of Antoine de la Mothe (1658-1730), the founder of the car city Detroit and later governor of Louisiana, who was born here. The appellation Cadillac was and still is only valid for sweet wines. The red wines were produced until the 2008 vintage under Premières Côtes de Bordeaux produced.
