The winery is located in the commune of Saint-Estèphe or the area of the same name in the Médoc (Bordeaux). In the 12th century, it was given to the bishop of Portiers, Monseigneur de Calon, as a gift. This was once the centre of the Roman settlement of Calones, which later became Saint-Estèphe. Until the 18th century, the place still had the addition Saint-Estèphe-de-Calon. In the 18th century, the estate came into the possession of the famous Marquis Alexandre de Ségur (1695-1755) by marriage. He also owned the predecessors of Château Lafite-Rothschild, Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Latour, but his favourite estate was Calon. He documented this by the traditional saying: "I produce wine on Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon". A heart symbol on the bottle label still reminds us of this story today.
Today the estate is owned by the two families Capbern-Gasqueton and Peyrelongue. The Capbern-Gasqueton family also owns Château Capbern-Gasqueton. In the 1855 Bordeaux Classification it was awarded third place (Troisième Cru Classé). For many years the label contained the text "Premier Cru de St-Estèphe", which was misleading because of the "only" third rank, until other producers successfully protested against it. The vineyards, mostly walled in with stone walls, cover 60 hectares and are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (45%), Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The long-lasting red wine is aged for 18 months in 50% new barriques. The second wine is called "Château Marquis de Calon".
