2011 Gattinara DOCG Riserva "Vigneto Valterana", Piedmont, Italy

Firm, quite deep, somewhat dried-vegetable to herbal and tobacco aroma of red and a little black berries with notes reminiscent of black olives, some cherries, dried flowers and a touch of tar. Ripe, firm, quite juicy fruit, smoky and tobacco spice, a little pepper and iodine, cocoa notes in the background, crumbly-sandy tannin, persistent, lots of power, some warmth, smoky, cedary and mineral tones, a little clove, still gaining juice and complexity with air, very good, spicy, a touch sweet finish
