The Italian region with the capital Campobasso is located in the middle of the boot on the Adriatic Sea and is bordered by Abruzzo in the north and Puglia in the south. It is divided into the two provinces Campobasso and Isernia. The name Molise is said to derive from a noble family in the Middle Ages. In the hills of the Sannio Mountains, wine is grown at an altitude of up to 600 metres above sea level. The mostly small vineyards of 905 less than half a hectare are very fragmented. The vineyards cover almost 6,000 hectares of vines.

The main red wine varieties are Aglianico, Cabernet Sauvignon,...

Synonym for the grape varieties Mazuelo and Tintilia del Molise. According to DNA analyses carried out in 2006, there should also be an independent variety of this name, which is cultivated in small quantities in the regions of Campania and Sardinia (ex Wine Grapes). However, no stocks were reported in 2010 (Kym Anderson).
