The winery "Azienda Agricola Cascina Nuova di Elio Altare" is located in the municipality of La Morra (province of Cuneo) in the Italian wine region of Piedmont
. The company was founded in 1948 and is now managed by Elio Altare. He is considered a pioneer of viticulture and a pioneer of new methods in the Langhe
. In 1978 he introduced the thinning of the vines, which was unusual in this area at the time, in order to improve quality. He also began experimenting with barrique ageing. Altare is considered one of the pioneers of modern Barolo and Barbera wines. The vineyards cover nine hectares of vineyards, planted with Nebbiolo (33%), Dolcetto (30%), Barbera (20%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%) and other red varieties. The flagship is the Barolo
"Vigneto Arborina". The DOC wines Barbera d'Alba
, Dolcetto d'Alba
are also produced. About 50.000 bottles of wine are produced annually. It is worth mentioning that the whole 1997 vintage was spoiled by bad corks and therefore was not marketed.
