1996 Valtellina Superiore DOCG Sassella Riserva "Rocce Rosse", Lombardy, Italy

Fairly mature nose with some old oak, ripe, preserved red berries and some black berries, delicate hint of tobacco, light herbaceous and mineral notes, some undergrowth. Clear, elegant, juicy fruit on the palate, elegant spice, some herbaceous notes and old oak, elegant tart spicy notes and some mineral notes, very persistent, fine mature tannins, has some depth, very good long finish. Has surprisingly shown a positive development once more, tremendously pleasant to drink, currently in great condition.

Editor note: Markedly mature nose, complex with fairly prominent mineral notes, dried herbs, tobacco, partly dried red and some black berries, some soup greens and fairly prominent cedar wood. Quite tart on the palate with more prominent cedary notes, also tobacco and dried vegetal notes, restraiend fruit, very fine tannins, roasted notes, elegant acidity in the background, prominent mineral notes, good persistence and depth, appears quite mature, slightly reminiscent of a good Burgundy around 40 or 50 years old, but still alive and not showing any signs of falling apart, very good finish.
