The estate is located to the west of the municipality of Saint-Émilion in the area of the same name on the famous "Pied de Côte" site (at the foot of the hill). In 1924, Maurice de Boüard de Laforest bought a three-hectare vineyard called Clos de l'Angélus. From this you can hear the Angelus ringing (traditional morning ringing) from the three churches in the area at the same time; these are the chapel of Mazerat, the church of St Martin of Mazerat and the church of Saint- Émilion. The de Boüard family has a history of more than 700 years in Bordeaux. The new owner included the neighbouring Château Mazerat, which had already been in the family since 1850, and other estates. After the Second World War (1939-1945), the estate was given its present name. It was one of the first clients of the well-known oenologist Michel Rolland (*1947)

The estate was already classified as "Premier Grand Cru Classé B" in 1996 and finally even as "Premier Grand Cru Classé A" in 2012. This vintage was therefore bottled in black bottles with real gold printing. This year, Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal took over the management. The vineyards cover 39 hectares, but not all of them are classified. They are planted with Cabernet Franc (50%), Merlot (47%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (2%). Around ten hectares of Cabernet Franc vines are older than 60 years. The extremely long-lived red wine matures for 18 to 24 months in 100% new barriques. The label is adorned with a bell to match the name. The second wine is called "Le Carillon de l'Angélus". The family also has vineyards in South Africa
